Celebrating 40 Years

2/9/2015  This June, Sturgis Falls celebrates its 40th Anniversary, June 25 to 28. Traditionally, the theme or gift of the 40th anniversary is the ruby. The Board was inspired by this tradition, selecting “No Place Like Home” as the 2015 theme with Gary Kelley graciously agreeing to create the artwork. Kelley in his artistic rendering recalls The Wizard of Oz -- Dorothy, Toto and others – a classic film inspired by the magical storybook. A local artist with world-wide accolades, Kelley’s art can be viewed on the walls nationwide in Barnes and Noble Booksellers, and in the pages of numerous magazines including The New Yorker and Rolling Stone.

The Sturgis Falls Celebration brings together all of the best things summer has to offer, from one of the best parades in the state, to many genres of free entertainment at multiple venues, a carnival, and an arts and crafts fair – all located in the heart of Cedar Fall and all within walking distance of each other.

Overman Park, located across the street from City Hall, is home to many long running traditions including the Bill Riley Talent Competition and the US Marine Band performance. The Kidsway tent, complete with a stage for magicians and performers, provides children an area of entertainment and hands-on discovery. On Sunday, within the streets surrounding Overman Park, shop the offerings of the Arts and Crafts Fair with regional vendors and artisans.

Gateway Park is located just across the river from Downtown Cedar Falls. Thursday night kicks off the celebration and throughout the weekend you are sure to hear one of your favorite classics -- from country to rock n’ roll. This is the place, for those 21 and older, to grab a beer with friends or family. Also located in Gateway Park is the Gateway Market, one of the newest features of Sturgis Falls. Vendors offer a variety of products that shoppers can purchase, all in one convenient location. For those who enjoy bumper cars or the Ferris wheel, the carnival is located at the West end of the park.

Sturgis Falls Celebration is the perfect opportunity to check out some other great Cedar Falls offerings -- visit the Historical Society’s Victorian House or Ice House Museum. On Sunday, in Police Officers Memorial Park, the 9th annual Classic Car Show will take place with multiple categories and award winning models.
