The Sturgis Falls Celebration Children’s Choir is an annual
tradition in the entertainment line-up for the Overman Park Band
Shell Stage. This
special choir features the voices of 4th, 5th,
and 6th graders, representing Cedar Falls, Price
Laboratory, Saint Patrick and home-schooled students.
The Choir began as a vision of local music instructor, Michelle
Swanson. With the
support of the Sturgis Falls Celebration Board of Directors, the
Children’s Choir performed for the first time in 1994.
Under her leadership, approximately 1,000 children have
shared their enthusiasm, energy, and love for music with the
audiences in Overman Park during the Celebration.
A new era began in 2006, with the appointment of Katie Houts
as the Sturgis Falls Celebration Children’s Choir coordinator.
Katie is Director of Worship and Music Ministries at St.
John Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, where she directs the
King’s Kids children’s choir and two adult choirs.
She is a native of West Union, a graduate of Wartburg
College, and now resides in Cedar Falls with her husband, Ryan.
Since her stage debut as little orphan Annie in 1992, Katie
has appeared in 10 musical productions as part of the Opera House
Players in Elkader and at North Fayette High School, including: Annie;
Bye, Bye Birdie; Singin’ in the Rain; The Music Man; and Little
Shop of Horrors. During
her college career at Wartburg, Katie toured Australia with the
Knighliters Jazz Band (piano), toured Europe with the Wartburg
College Wind Ensemble (French horn), and accompanied the
Ritterchor (men’s choir). She
continues to accompany Wartburg students and faculty for recitals
and competitions around the area.
Over the years the Sturgis Falls Children’s Children’s
Choir has enjoyed support from the entire community in a variety
of ways, such as, rehearsal locations, piano accompaniment,
treats, chaperones, and, of course, the awesome audiences in
Overman Park.
The Sturgis Falls Celebration Children’s Choir will continue
to feature youthful voices lifted in song and provide a
“splish-splashing” good time for the students of Cedar Falls!
Registration forms will be sent home with students in early
May, and are also available by
